On May 20, Nogizaka46 held DAY2 of their '14th YEAR BIRTHDAY LIVE' at Tokyo Dome, where fifth-generation member Satsuki Sugawara was announced as the group's fourth captain.
Sugawara, who had been serving as vice captain, officially took over the role from Minami Umezawa following Umezawa's graduation concert on May 21. During the encore MC, Umezawa announced the leadership transition, saying she wanted to pass the role on to Sugawara, who had supported her closely as vice captain.
Sugawara expressed, "Just like everyone here, I love Nogizaka46 more than anything in the world. I’m determined to protect this group." While holding back tears, she added that she feels anxiety about taking on the responsibility, but she hopes to move forward as herself together with the group.
Umezawa encouraged Sugawara by reflecting on her own experience on becoming captain three years ago, "Even though it may feel incredibly heavy right now, what things will look like by the time you pass down this title depends on you, and you can change things as much as you want and grow stronger from here. The thing I want to tell you most is that if you continue to protect the trust of the people closest to you, everyone will definitely help you, so you'll be okay. Any worries can be worked through together, and creating the future of Nogizaka46 is fun too. Just do your best little by little. I'm looking forward to the future of Nogizaka46."
