An original animated series based on Kingdom Hearts has officially been announced, marking the franchise's first anime adaptation. The series will air on Disney Channel and stream on Disney+.

Co-produced by Disney Kids & Family and Square Enix, the series will feature a completely new story created specifically for the adaptation. Tetsuya Nomura, creator of the Kingdom Hearts series, will be involved alongside Square Enix's creative team.

Launched in 2002, Kingdom Hearts follows Sora, a Keyblade wielder who travels through worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar properties while battling the forces of darkness alongside his companions.

Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis said the series will remain true to Kingdom Hearts while allowing fans to experience its world "in a completely new way."

The project was announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026 in Anaheim, California.
