Hawaii-born singer Tegan has made her solo debut with her first single, "I choose me," released on July 29 through avex.
"I choose me" centers on the importance of choosing yourself after spending too much time trying to meet someone else's expectations. Its music video reflects that message through a doll-like character caught between how others see her and how she truly feels. Set against a retro-modern backdrop, the video explores individuality and breaking free from expectations.
Tegan, a fifth-generation Japanese American born in Hawaii, began performing at the age of 12 as part of a ukulele duo after passing a Hawaii talent audition in 2015. At 15, she performed at the 'Fuji Rock Festival,' becoming the youngest artist to appear at the festival at the time.
After stepping away from music, Tegan returned to performing in 2024 through an audition show based in Thailand. With "I choose me," she is beginning a new chapter as a solo artist in Japan.
The song was also performed ahead of its release at Tegan's debut showcase, giving attendees an early introduction to her distinctive voice and performance style.
